Starting a Magazine on a Shoestring Budget Part B
I’m not one that gives up easily. The next model I studied was rather interesting and I plan to implement it this summer either myself or by helping a couple of local ezines do it: Discover Southside and SoVaLife.
To understand what I discovered you need to understand the standard structure of a magazine. A glossy, newsstand style magazine is usually comprised of about 50% editorial content (text and graphical elements) and 50% advertising content. The percentages will vary slightly from issue to issue but that is the usual breakdown. Of the advertising content about half goes to cover the cost of production (printing, paying the contributors and whatnot) and the rest is profit. A 64pp magazine will have about 32pp of advertising, sixteen of which should cover the cost of production.
The numbers I used to construct the chart were from Print Pelican’s automated cost calculator. I chose Print Pelican after an extensive search for magazine printers. They have the best reputation and price structure for short-run magazine printing of any printer I checked out and there were many. They also have an excellent quality product; I ordered samples and was very much impressed. The numbers were collected in mid January 2009, and are based on an 80# Gloss Cover, 80# Gloss Text, Saddle Stitched, Subscription Card-black. The numbers may have changed some since then, but it doesn’t change the concept.
In the chart, the dotted lines represent the cost of printing and mailing (using Print Pelican’s mailing service) minus a two dollar per issue subscription charge ($24 per year). The surprising thing was how few subscriptions were required to negate the need for high priced ads.
The highest per page need for ad dollars doesn’t go above $320 for the 64pp magazine (16pp of ads to cover costs). That makes an eighth page ad come to forty bucks. ($319.74 per page @ 64pp, $310.70 per page @ 48pp, $265.13 per page @ 32pp) Mind you now, that is the highest need for ad dollars per page for 64pp magazines and under. Ad dollar needs fall off before and after the points indicated on the chart.
Most printers use an 8-up (& 8 down) printing method so you’ll probably notice that it is sometimes less expensive to print a magazine, excluding mailing costs, with page counts that are multiples of sixteen. For example, try 1000 copies of 64pp vs. 68pp on Print Pelican’s calculator. That’s why the chart shows 32pp, 48pp and 64pp. The 128pp is there for comparison.

Hi there…I am almost exactly one month behind you as I had surgery Dec. 4 in Miami Beach, FL. The warm weather helps and I certainly don’t have to deal
with snow or ice. Question: On your second visit to the doc, did he give you the instruction to do weight bearing at your own pace or with specific limits,
and if so, what were they? I am scheduled for Jan 20 visit when I am expected to do wb with crutches. Also, how early did you do exercises, massages, and PT?
Finally, when did you start ice?
I appreciate any answers you give me.

I’m going to coat-tail on what “Very Evolved” said… The way you connect to your audience is… Know who you are writing to. You need to pick a Target Audience and stick to them. You wouldn’t write to an audience of 14yr olds the same way you would write to an audience of 60yr olds.

I’ve been into environmentalism for 20 some odd years now. I’ve always wanted to find a way to reduce our usage of the electrical grid, which I’ve done to some extent with a few solar panels, but I can’t really afford anything that would power the whole home. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Grooving is something that I love. I came upon this sweet website that has this cool looking software that gives you the ability to develop your own beats! I am not easy to impress so take my word when I tell you that this is amazing! I would suggest this product I even got my parents to play with this. Everybody found everything that we longed-for. This woman is located in jail. Which means that today lets forget about the idea plus lindsay. Lindsay possibly thinks that those must be re-writing memory as regards to the girl on account that all the people might be cleansing hailing from her spotlight. Justignored right now. I hope the fact is the end from her creating a mock of the Our judicial model. Doubt is imprisonment would soften her. While i think this woman is will be more annoyed than ever plus a terrible girl. She is constantly delivering all the posture repeatedly. or alternatively possibly she do it just because she typically can get them made, and very well, she clearly cannot get it done in the jail now would she? I work for Cingular. Go to the website and download the song from a computer and have it sent to your phone. then you dont pay internet charges for looking for it, only a one time fee for downloading. (You have to log onto your account, may need info from whose name it’s in.)

It does not sound like a good idea at all to have a tummy tuck right after a c-section. You will not get the best possible results if you rush it. You need to let your body get back to normal after the pregnancy and THEN think about a tummy tuck. I know how you feel. I’ve had four children (including twins) and my tummy was a saggy wrinkly mess. It was torture having to wait, I was so self conscious. I had a tummy tuck with lipo of the flanks five months ago and it was absolutely the BEST thing I ever did for myself. I waited two years after my last c-section to have it done (probably would have done it sooner if it had not been for our financial situation). It’s so nice not having to worry about all the skin and flab anymore. I can wear what I want and feel good in it. Please give it time though, it is a VERY rough recovery. Much harder than a c-section. The last thing you want to do is put all that extra strain on your body when you have a newborn to take care of. It’s also better to lose all the pregnancy weight before the tummy tuck- that way they can get rid of more skin and your scar will be lower- TRUST ME! I researched this for years before I did it. There’s a good reason microwave ovens are made with safety interlocks. The greatest risk is to sensitive electronic equipment (like pacemakers). Here are some rough estimates based on engineering experience. Picture putting half a pound of chicken in the microwave. It should cook in 4 minutes or so. Without the door, it would cook to about the same level in about 8 minutes. Without the door, but with the chicken just outside where the door was, the chicken would probably cook to about the same level in 10-12 minutes. Put your arm in the same place, and it would cook to the same level in 15 minutes.

YES! As long as they look like you have spent a lot of time on them then they always go down well. I have made the majority of my presents, birthday and christmas for the past 3 years. I consider what they would really like or what would suit them and then make it. I honestly have had better reactions to things that i’ve made than bought. Variety is important though. Making the same thing all the time will bore them as well as you. I have made everything from sweets to a lamp. Just be creative and think about what the person would like and you can’t fail. Just make sure you actually spend time making it though and not just stick 2 sequins on a box last minute.

I’m guessing till the end of the August or so. It is making good money so they will keep it around as long as possible. It also depends on where you live. Big Cities will be more likely to run it longer because of the large theater complexes. Where a small town may move on to the next big movie when they need to.

not really worth the money. tomtom is just as nice, actually their new models, the 340 and 340s make the 255 cry. and they are less expensive. they have over 1 million poi more than the garmins, have lane guidance and iq routes. none of which a garmin under $399 will have. you can plan routes in advance and save them easier than the garmin too. best buy sells the 340s which is identical to the 255 but better for $229. im sure its cheaper online somewhere.

Just about all that is on my mind is cancer sticks. I do not wish to light up and if anyone offered me a cig right now, I would refuse.
